Ravage and Laserbeak are the two cassettes I wanted most, so I’m stuck picking up all three packages. The original release was accompanied by Buzzsaw, as well, so the most I can do is offer a shrug. The thing is: it’s a matter of authenticity. Laserbeak is the quintessential Soundwave minion. The biggest one is that Soundwave comes with Buzzsaw instead of Laserbeak. I don’t have very many criticisms for this toy. They’re quickly becoming hard to find, though, and they’re Walmart-exclusive releases, so you might have to pay quite a bit more. Soundwave cost about $60 at retail, while each of the two-packs retailed for $20. Along with those, we picked up the two cassette two-packs: Laserbeak & Frenzy, and Rumble & Ravage. The Soundwave Transformer itself, who comes packaged with the Buzzsaw cassette tape, is in the biggest box. And it’s just about perfect.Īll in all, we picked up 3 packages totalling right around $100. The coolest (and yes, maybe the silliest) Transformer is in my office and on my shelf. Soundwave has been my favorite Transformer for years and years, and also the one toy I could never get ahold of as a kid.Īnd now, I have Soundwave. For me, the big moment came this summer, a year later, with the release of the G1 Soundwave toy. Titans Return finally gave us a retail, G1 styled updated Soundwave toy.as a big overpriced Leader Class figure. When Walmart announced the return of Generation 1 Transformers toys last summer, it was a topic of much chatter in TheNerdy’s editorial Slack. Yes, of COURSE there was a Soundblaster version! The Hasbro version changed a few things, mainly to make Soundwave look more like the G1 toy, but also made the smart decision to bundle him with all his original cassettes, rather than sell them separately as with Takara. In fact, they are actually the same size as the G1 cassettes, so you can put the Masterpiece cassettes into G1 Soundwave and the G1 Cassettes into Masterpiece Soundwave if you so wish! So here is their figure of Shattered Glass Soundwave - sorry, SIR Soundwave.Ī perfect representation of the cartoon model who transforms into a startlingly wonderful version of his G1 alternate mode, this Soundwave is regarded as one of the best of the Masterpiece line.Īlongside diecast metal and brilliant paintwork and detailing, Soundwave has a ton of accessories: his classic guns that double as batteries, a handheld pistol representing G1 Megatron's alt mode, a rectangular prism that represents his Energon cube dispensing from the cartoon, and his cassette companion Laserbeak.Ī whole new set of molds for his Recordicons were created, each one designed to be perfect to the cartoon and still look like the classic G1 cassettes. So Fun Publications, formerly the showrunners of BotCon, made a set in 2008 based around this universe. Yeah, its like a completely pathetic fanfiction EXCEPT IT'S OFFICIAL AND REAL It's basically an AU where the Autobots are evil and the Decepticons are good. Shattered Glass is a subject I've touched upon briefly thanks to a recent toy reveal concerning the series. I've been eyeing him up myself, but I do have other priorities. Probably worth getting at a fair price for the sheer crazy factor. Regardless, these figures are so silly its fantastic. The execution of this is so fantastic, even though Ratbat's head is just hanging out on the top. This version uses that awesome red and black deco AND MIXES IT WITH GOLD WHAT IS THIS AWESOME (Though the toy is called "Electrostatic Soundwave so it's still technically Soundwave). They HAD to do a Soundblaster version too! When the Japanese Headmasters line launched, Soundwave was repainted black and red into Soundblaster: Soundwave was a popular figure all the way into 1986, and new cassettes would be produced for him. Takara would later release G1 Soundwave in a 2 pack with Grimlock, and partnered with Frenzy (the BLUE one!). The mold was also altered slightly in several areas. The Takara release included a case to hold one of his cassette minions, and was partnered with Rumble (the RED one) instead of Buzzsaw. However, Soundwave was armed he wielded a missile firing blaster and a shoulder cannon, both of which transform into batteries to hide in his tape player mode.įor a G1 toy, Soundwave offers more articulation than most, and holds up decently even today. Of course, he transforms into an everyday tape player - not the most evil alternate mode out there! He was partnered with Buzzsaw, who helped demonstrate his cassette gimmick. When Hasbro adapted him for the Transformers line, he was rebranded as the evil Decepticon Soundwave. He would come with 1 of 3 mini Cassette partners, who could fit inside his chest while in cassette mode. Soundwave started life as a figure from the Japanese "Micro Change" toyline, given the simple title of "Cassette Man".
